The challenge: To cycle from the Grace Gates of Lords Cricket Ground in St Johns Wood, London back the home of Sparsholt Cricket Club , The Norman Edwards Memorial Ground, Locks Lane, Sparsholt

When: 4th May 2015 (The first Bank Holiday Monday in May)

How far? 78 miles or 126 km on a route that takes us out of London via Hammersmith, Hounslow & Staines, through Chertsey, Lightwater and Farnham and then west to Upton Grey, through the Candover Valley and home via Itchen Abbas (as prepared by Cycle Tours UK (www.cycletoursuk.com). (see our route maps)

Is there a shorter route?  Yes. For those who want to raise money but fancy a shorter ride, there will be the option to join us at Upton Grey and ride the last 25 miles (40km).

Raising Money for: Primarily we will be riding for two charities, namely:

Chance to Shine, a national charity on a mission to spread the power of cricket throughout schools and communities (www.chancetoshine.org); and

The Haven Breast Cancer Support Centre based in Titchfield  (www.thehaven.org.uk)

In addition a limited amount of the funds raised will be going back to Sparsholt Cricket Club to improve facilities at the ground.

Each participant will be expected to raise their own sponsorship, with the aid of www.justgiving.com or similar.  The serious fundraising will begin two months before the ride.

How do we get to London? A coach will be going from Winchester early on the morning of the 4th of May to get us there.

Is there going to be support along the way? A number of club stalwarts will be driving support vehicles on the day.   There will be a number of experienced cyclists who will act as team leaders to make sure no-one gets left behind or lost.

Who is getting riding? Sixteen members of Sparsholt Cricket Club will be joined by some village residents, representatives from our two corporate sponsors (CALA homes and Savills) and various friends of the club, who are either up for the challenge or have had their arm twisted to take part.

In all we expect around 30 riders to complete the whole ride but would welcome any other people who want to join us for either the long or short version of the ride.

What do I need to do to prepare?

  • Make sure you have a decent bike suited to the ride.
  • Make sure it and you are suitably equipped –that probably means wearing lycra and definitely means buying the bespoke cycling jersey which is being prepared for the event.
  • Get some serious miles under your belt prior to the main ride (several of us will be tackling a ride organised by Cycle Tours UK on Easter Monday to get used to riding as a group).
  • Start thinking about who will sponsor you and how much you think you can raise.

What happens when we finish? We’ll have a reception party back at the club and would love to see as many people from the club and the village as possible.
